An probe into the death of a Russian general has confirmed
An probe into the death of a Russian general has confirmed that he committed suicide, a spokesman for investigators from the Russian Prosecutor General's Office said on Tuesday.

Col.-Gen. Viktor Vlasov, the acting head of the ministry's housing department, was found dead with gunshot wounds in his office in Moscow on February 21. Ballistic tests showed that he had shot himself. He was 57.

"The investigation established that Vlasov had committed suicide and the criminal investigation was halted," Vladimir Markin said.

Vlasov coordinated an ambitious ministry program on the provision of residential apartments for families of military servicemen, which had a budget of 13 billion rubles (about $530 million) in 2007.

Shortly before his death, Vlasov had begun inquiries into the activities of the ministry's housing department, in the course of which he discovered a number of violations.
