Moscow and Paris are main contenders to the organization of the 30th Summer Olympic Games in 2012
Moscow and Paris are main contenders to the organization of the 30th Summer Olympic Games in 2012, head of the Moscow department of sports and entertainments Alexander Polinsky said on Monday. "Today 85% of British bookmakers put Moscow on the second place while Paris still holds the first," he noted. According to him, a year ago Moscow and Singapore shared the seventh place. In April-May 2004 the Russian capital took the fifth-sixth place and on May 17 it already ranked among five official contenders. They are Moscow, New York, Madrid, London and Paris. An evaluation commission of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) will visit Moscow on March 13-18, 2005, Mr. Polinsky said. The commission will comprise 20 experts to assess Moscow's sporting infrastructure. In May the IOC executive committee will hold a session and on July 6, 2005 an IOC session will take place in Singapore to name the venue of the 2012 Olympic Games. The Russian capital already hosted the Olympics in 1980. However, the leading western teams boycotted the Games because of the Soviet invasion to Afghanistan. Some famous athletes, for instance legendary British runners Sebastian Coe and Steve Ovett, participated in the Olympic Games not under their national flags but under the flag with five Olympic rings
