Putin and Khakamada ready to hand over the signatures
President Vladimir Putin and Irina Khakamada have completed collecting their supporters’ signatures and are ready to present them to the Central Election Commission (CEC) for verification, beginning from Jan. 23 According to Russian electoral laws, each presidential candidate has to gather at least 2 million signatures to support his/her candidacy, unless such candidate is put forward by a party with a representation in the State Duma. Putin’s representatives said they had been able to collect more than 7 million signatures, about three-and-half times the required number, thanks to active supporters of Putin in the regions. Khakamada’s supporters said they collected about 2,9 million signatures — out of which 1.3 million were gathered in Moscow and the rest in regions. Confirming these data today, CEC Chairman Alexander Veshnyakov noted these figures are preliminary.
