Motherland bloc loses its presidential candidate
Central Election Commission have denied registration of one of the Motherland bloc leaders and former Russian Central Bank head Viktor Gerashchenko as presidential candidate, while Motherland party bloc leaders announced that their single candidate for presidency is Gerashchenko. This leaves the bloc without a candidate at all. The registration have been denied by CEC because of Gerashchenko refusal to collect 2 million signatures of his supporters. The right not to collect the signatures is given to representatives of the parties, which were elected to Duma, but Gerashchenko had been nominated not by the winning bloc itself, but by one the parties in it. Earlier today Motherland party bloc leaders announced that their single candidate for presidency is Gerashchenko. The statement signed by all leaders of the parties constituting the bloc reads that this candidate only will be supported by the bloc and has the right to represent it and speak on its behalf. The statement also stresses that the bloc did not give its approval for Sergey Glaziev self-nomination and for his support and did not allow him to use bloc name and symbolism in the course of his campaign, as well as for bloc regional offices to participate in it. Despite this statement, CEC ahve refused to register the banker as the necessary procedures had not been arranged. To nominate a single candidate, all parties of the bloc must have held meetings, announcing their candidate, and this was not done.
