Russian President Vladimir Putin and King Harald V of Norway exchanged messages on the 60th anniversary of the liberation of northern Norway by the Red Army
Russian President Vladimir Putin and King Harald V of Norway exchanged messages on the 60th anniversary of the liberation of northern Norway by the Red (Soviet) Army, the Kremlin press service said on Thursday. "On these days we recollect 60-year old events when Soviet soldiers crossed the Norwegian border and liberated the northern regions of our country from Nazi invaders. The liberation of Sor Varanger was an important date in Norway's military history. The region was liberated during hard and bloody battles and many Soviet soldiers fell on Norwegian territory. All Norwegians are grateful to the brave Red Army soldiers for the contribution and losses. Sixty years ago Norwegians and Russians fought hand to hand against the common enemy. The dramatic events of 1944 are a part of our common historical heritage. Today Norwegians and Russians are peacefully cooperating for the sake of a better future of our nations," King Harald V wrote in his message to Vladimir Putin forwarded on October 22. The King of Norway thanked Red Army soldiers-liberators and Russian people on behalf of Norwegians. "Their feat played a decisive role in our freedom and peace 60 years ago," he stressed. Vladimir Putin wrote in reply, "We highly value the respect and attention of the Norwegian leadership and ordinary people to the memory of Soviet soldiers who fell on Norwegian territory. Our joint fight against Nazism consolidated centuries-old good-neighborly traditions of Russia and Norway. Today this historic experience is a good basis for further overall development of Russian-Norwegian relations and the expansion of our cooperation on the international scene." In conclusion Vladimir Putin congratulated King Harald V on the 60th anniversary of the liberation of northern Norway and wished Norwegian people peace and prosperity
