Russia's foreign minister will visit Japan on November 4-5 to discuss
Russia's foreign minister will visit Japan on November 4-5 to discuss arrangements for a bilateral presidential meeting on the sidelines of an APEC summit in Lima later in November.

The news was announced by an official foreign ministry spokesman on Saturday.

Sergei Lavrov is scheduled to discuss the signing of a peace treaty to formally end World War II hostilities, which has been delayed due to the ongoing dispute over the South Kurils, a former Japanese territory annexed by the Soviet Union after WWII.

Lavrov and his Japanese counterpart Hirofumi Nakasone are "expected to discuss the timetable for Russian-Japanese talks, including arrangements for a top-level Russian-Japanese meeting due to take place in Lima," Andrei Nesterenko said.

The two foreign ministers will also discuss the drafting of agreements on nuclear and space research cooperation, as well as on visa issues and mutual assistance in criminal investigation.

Earlier on Saturday, Lavrov urged a compromise between Russia and Japan on the territorial dispute over the Kuril Islands.

The four southernmost islands of the Kuril chain, which stretches from Russia's Kamchatka Peninsula to the north-east coast of Japan's Hokkaido Island, remain Russian territory.

"We have the desire to solve this problem. A compromise is needed for the resolution of various issues," Japan's Kyodo news agency quoted the Russian foreign minister as saying.

Japan's former foreign minister, Masahiko Koumura, visited Moscow in April 2008.
