There were 47 passengers and six crew members on board the plane headed for Shanghai. A worker at Baotou Airport, a city in the Inner Mongolia region, said the plane crashed shortly after take-off early Sunday morning, reports the CBC News. The plane crashed into a frozen lake in Nanhai Park "only about a dozen seconds" after taking off, Xinhua said. The area is about 330 miles northwest of Beijing. A worker in the ticket office at Baotou Airport said the crash site was just outside the airport in a park surrounding a tributary of the Yellow River. Police and firefighters were breaking the ice on the lake to search for victims. State television reported that 17 bodies had been pulled from the lake by midday Sunday. It showed pieces of the burned-out plane sitting in the lake, as emergency workers in small rowboats pushed ice out of the way, wrote the Guardian. According to the Bloomberg, the crash is the worst air disaster in China since May 2002, when 112 people were killed in a China Northern Airlines crashed in the sea near Dalian in northeastern China, according to Agence France-Presse. Baotou is an industrial city of about 2.3 million people, located in a region rich in coal and iron ore. It's home to Baotou Iron & Steel Group, one of the largest steel companies in China. China Eastern Airlines is the nation's third-largest carrier by fleet size. Its shares are listed in Hong Kong and Shanghai. Shares in Hong Kong rose 1.7 percent to HK$1.79 on Friday, while its Shanghai counterpart lost 0.2 percent to 4.61 yuan
