One person was injured when a Mercedes car crashed
One person was injured when a Mercedes car crashed into the eternal flame of a WWII memorial in central Krasnodar, Southern Russia, early on Thursday, a traffic police spokeswoman said.

The 19-year-old driver, who was speeding, lost control of the vehicle at a crossroad and crashed into the memorial. The car burst into flames on impact.

"His passenger, a 35-year-old from Kuban, was injured in the crash and was hospitalized with multiple fractures and concussion," Marina Krotova said. "The driver was uninjured."

The car belonged to the injured passenger, who had apparently asked his friend to drive him home as he had been drinking and was over the limit.

A spokesman for the local police department, Ilya Shakalov, said a criminal case had been launched.
