Rescue workers in south Siberia's Altai Territory spent two days trying
Rescue workers in south Siberia's Altai Territory spent two days trying to help a flock of goats and sheep descend a cliff, a local emergencies spokeswoman said on Thursday.

The animals ran up the cliff after being attacked by a pack of wolves.

"Around 200 animals climbed an almost vertical 200-meter high cliff. They were there for around four days without food or water. Being hungry and weak, they could not descend," spokeswoman Svetlana Lyashko said.

Rescuers used rope rescue equipment to help the animals to safety.

Some 129 sheep or goats were saved during the operation, which the Emergency Situations Ministry called an "unprecedented case." The remaining animals died, the majority of them tumbling down the cliff.
