Sergei Mironov hopes that the situation around the presidential elections in Ukraine will be solved peacefully
Russian Federation Council Speaker Sergei Mironov hopes that the situation around the presidential elections in Ukraine will be solved peacefully. "I think negotiations will lead to a compromise, and I hope the situation will calm down, and the sides will make a normal sensible decision," the Russian speaker told reporters. He expressed regret over the actions of the opposition leader, Viktor Yushchenko, that complicated the situation even further. "The people should be respected. It is very humiliating when a politician turns the results of the people's will expression into a clownery," said Mr. Mironov. "The winner extended him [Yushchenko] the hand of reason. Instead, he came up with some mise en scene of allegedly swearing in," said the speaker. In his opinion, however, Mr. Yushchenko is a prominent politician who is popular in Ukraine and has interesting ideas in his program. Mr. Mironov believes that Mr. Yushchenko yielded to "the law of the mob" on Tuesday and hesitated deep inside him when he was offered to swear in. Mr. Mironov particularly emphasized that Viktor Yanukovich, as the victor, was ready to speak to his opponent about the distribution of posts in the government and implementing the ideas of the opposition leader's program
