A border service guard and a police officer have been killed
A border service guard and a police officer have been killed in two separate attacks in Russia's North Caucasus Republic of Daghestan, an interior ministry source said on Thursday.

The border guard was killed when gunmen opened fire in a drive-by attack on Wednesday evening in Daghestan's capital, Makhachkala.

"When the border guard stopped his UAZ service vehicle for repairs, he was gunned down by unidentified assailants driving a VAZ-2199 car," the source said.

The soldier died at the scene. A search for the attackers is underway.

In a separate attack, a police officer was killed and two others injured when an unidentified gunman fired shots at a police vehicle parked near the central mosque in Khasavyurt.

Daghestan and Russia's other North Caucasus republics have seen a rise in violence recently linked to militants based in neighboring Chechnya and internal fighting between criminal gangs.
