Sergei Ivanov said he supported developing military cooperation between CIS countries
Defense Minister Sergei Ivanov said he supported developing military cooperation between CIS countries. "An assessment of how cooperation between CIS countries has developed reveals that it is imperative for our states to combine their efforts to fight against and defend the world community from terrorism," Mr. Ivanov said at the opening of the CIS Defense Ministers Council. He said security in the CIS could only be guaranteed by expanding interaction, primarily military cooperation. Mr. Ivanov said that in the past few years the CIS Defense Ministers Council had accomplished a considerable amount in this area. The defense ministers will focus on long-term cooperation during the session. They will consider a draft Concept for Cooperation between the CIS Countries until 2010, the Program for CIS Military Cooperation until 2010 and a number of other long-term documents, he said. "Military cooperation should be developed," Mr. Ivanov said. "This approach will allow consistent decisions to be made which take into account each state's national interests." He added that special attention should be given to the modernization of the military. Armenian National Security Council Secretary and Defense Minister Serzh Sargsyan, Azerbaijani Defense Minister Safar Abiyev, Belarussian Defense Minister Leonid Maltsev, Kazakh Defense Minister Mukhtar Altynbayev, Kyrgyz Defense Minister Esen Topoyev and Tajik Defense Minister Sherali Kharullayev are attending the session. A representative of Uzbekistan's Defense Ministry, Ukrainian Deputy Defense Minister Igor Timofeyev, a representative of the Georgian Embassy in Russia, Vladimir Yakovlev, head of the headquarters for coordinating military cooperation between the CIS countries, and CIS Executive Secretary Vladimir Rushailo are also attending the session
