A businessman was shot dead while driving his SUV early
A businessman was shot dead while driving his SUV early on Friday in central Moscow in an apparent contract killing, police said.

The victim was found at 5:00 a.m. Moscow time (02:00 GMT) slumped behind the wheel of his Porsche Cayenne, which had crashed into a tree on the sidewalk of Trifonovsky street near the Rizhsky train station, a police source told RIA Novosti. There were ten bullet holes on the driver's side of the vehicle.

"The criminals shot at the driver while the car was moving, probably with a Kalashnikov assault rifle. They shot through the window injuring him, and when the car crashed into a tree on the sidewalk, fired more shots from the passenger side," the source said.

The man has been identified as Oleg Avlokhashvili, a 37-year-old Georgian-born businessman, who recently moved to Moscow. He was the general director of a factory, and leased office space.

"Everything indicates that this terrible crime in the center of the capital was a contract killing. It is also clear that the killers, of whom there were probably two, had been following their victim," the source said.

Investigators say they are in possession of information suggesting that Avlokhashvili had links to criminal groups. However, this information has not been confirmed.

Footage from a surveillance camera on the facade of a business center near the car is being examined, he said.
