On Thursday Tokyo State University hosted a roundtable on the topic "Russian language in Russia and the world" as part of the second Russian Language Week in Japan. Academician Vitaly Kostomarov, President of the Alexander Pushkin State Institute of the Russian language delivered a report on the modern condition and development trends of Russian. He told his Japanese colleagues about foreign borrowings and word formation in the Russian language. Those attending the roundtable were chairman of the Japanese Russian Literature Association, professor Junichi Sato, well-known Russian grammar teacher and author of textbooks, Mitsuyoshi Numano, professor of Slavonic languages and literatures at Tokyo University, and other Japanese philologists. In the afternoon Russian delegates met with heads of the Association of the Russian Language Translators in Japan. During the Russian Language Week Japanese people interested in this language can communicate with Russian-speaking people. This event helps increase the interest in the Russian language studies in Japan. The first Russian Language Week was held in Tokyo in the fall of 2003. The second week is running in three Japanese cities, Tokyo, Nagoya and Osaka.
