Russian President Vladimir Putin has cautioned against pushing Ukraine into mass-scale unrest
Speaking at a press conference in The Hague, where he arrived for a EU-Russia summit, President Putin said: "I am deeply convinced that we have absolutely no moral right to push the large European country [Ukraine is] into mass-scale unrest of any sort." "We must not adopt the practice of settling such controversies through street protests. We must make every effort to ensure that such controversies are settled in a constitutional way, in compliance with the law," the Russian leader pointed out. "I do not think other countries can recognize or refuse to recognize the elections in Ukraine. This is the Ukrainian people's business. Their polls need no recognition from the outside," emphasized Mr Putin. Russia does not consider itself entitled to interfere in the election process in Ukraine and to impose its own opinion, he said, adding, "we are willing to work with whichever president the Ukrainian people will elect." The Russian leader called his audience's attention to the fact that the team of the opposition candidate Viktor Yushchenko had signed all official documents concerning the results of the presidential vote. "During the final vote count, representatives of the Yushchenko camp signed all [relevant] documents, thus making it possible for the Central Electoral Commission to conclude that the winner was Yanukovych," he said. "Ukraine's election laws were adopted with direct involvement of the opposition. It can even be said that the opposition is the main architect of Ukrainian election legislation," Mr Putin remarked. The Russian leader said he believed that all controversies related to the election campaign in Ukraine should be solved within the framework of the effective Constitution and other national laws. "The legitimate way is known-all claims should go to court," he noted
