Russia is sending to Brussels its chief military representative to NATO, General of the Army Alexei Maslov, a Defense Ministry source said on Tuesday.

"General Maslov is leaving for Brussels on Tuesday evening to carry out his duties as chief military representative to NATO," the source said.

Maslov, 55, a former commander of Russia's Ground Forces, was appointed to the post on August 4.

NATO spokesman James Appathurai said on Monday that the Russia-NATO Council could in the near future resume its work, suspended after Russia's five-day military conflict with Georgia in August, at ambassadorial level.

Appathurai also said that the foreign ministers of 26 alliance member countries may discuss the Russian president's proposals for a European security treaty at a December 2-3 meeting in Brussels.

NATO suspended contacts within the Russia-NATO Council on August 19, accusing Moscow of using disproportionate force against Georgia after Tbilisi launched a devastating assault on Tskhinvali, the capital of breakaway South Ossetia, on August 7.

Following NATO's announcement Russia's Defense Ministry said it was suspending all cooperation with the military alliance.
