The FSB branch in the Novosibirsk Region of West Siberia
The FSB branch in the Novosibirsk Region of West Siberia has suspended an investigation into the case of a former political activist suspected of terrorist activities, his lawyer said Wednesday.

The investigation into the case was suspended due to the poor health of the suspect, Nikolai Baluyev, who is accused of plotting terrorist attacks in Novosibirsk in 2005.

"The investigation is expected to resume as soon as Nikolai recovers his health," Pyotr Fisenko said, adding that although Baluyev was at home in Novosibirsk, he was still unable to undergo questioning or take part in other investigation activities.

Baluyev, an activist of an unofficial local branch of the National Bolshevik Party (NBP), was detained in May 2005 and was kept in a pre-trial detention center. His health seriously deteriorated while in detention and a local court released him on November 1.

Baluyev and another activist, Vyacheslav Rusakov, were detained on charges of plotting terrorist acts and the illegal possession of explosives and ammunition. During a search of the defendants' houses and several hideouts around the city, police found four artillery shells, more than two kilograms of TNT, weapons, ammunition and literature on the preparation of terrorist acts and the manufacture of explosive devices.

According to the results of the Federal Security Service (FSB) investigation, the two NBP activists had been collecting explosives for a year and had conducted test explosions. The prosecution accuses the two men of planning to set off explosive devices in a number of administrative buildings and to blow up the dam of the Novosibirsk hydroelectric power plant.
