The State Duma adopted amendments to the law "On Political Parties" in the third and final reading
The State Duma adopted amendments to the law "On Political Parties" in the third and final reading. With the needed 226 votes for the law's approval, 373 deputies voted for the law, 67 against it, and one deputy abstained from voting. Amendments to the law provide for an increase in the minimum membership of political parties in Russia from 10,000 to 50,000 people, and in the numerical strength of regional branches - from 100 to 500 people. The law establishes a transition period till January 1, 2006, during which the officially registered political parties will have to bring their numerical strength to 50,000 members as a minimum. According to the document, "the controlling bodies can check the parties and their regional branches' numerical strength not oftener than once a year."
