Sergei Bagapsh and Raul Khadzhimba want Sakashvili out of Abhazia
The parties of the internal political conflict in Abkhazia (a self-proclaimed republic in Georgia) are moving towards a sensible compromise. This is the opinion that Gen. Vladimir Romanenko, first deputy head of the CIS Institute, expressed in his interview with RIA Novosti. "This is a sensible compromise that averts civil war, which, until recently, was quite a real prospect for Abkhazia," he said. According to Romanenko, "each side has assumed serious obligations" within the achieved compromise. Romanenko recalled that presidential candidate Sergei Bagapsh "had a very serious position." The Abkhazian Council of the Elders supported his candidacy. "The Council of the Elders is an influential authority whose opinion was crucial," stressed Romanenko. "The fact that both candidates decided to join their hands is good in every sense. The main thing is that it is instrumental for the Abkhazian people," he noted. Romanenko is hopeful that the agreement between Khadzhimba and Bagapsh would help heal the split in the republic. Sergei Bagapsh and Raul Khadzhimba are ready for a rerun of the elections within one team. Bagapsh said this to reporters in Sukhumi after another round of consultations with Khadzhimba on Sunday night, which were attended by Abkhazian Prime Minister Nodar Khashba. "If an agreement is achieved, we will participate in the elections within a single team and send all the armed people home," said Bagapsh. According to him, he will participate in the elections as a presidential candidate while Khadzhimba as a vice-presidential candidate. Raul Khadzhimba has confirmed this information.
