Vladimir Putin said that Russia would play a constructive but intermediary role on the post-Soviet space
Russian President Vladimir Putin said that Russia would play a constructive but intermediary role on the post-Soviet space. "Only people can determine their destiny in any country," he stressed. According to the head of state, Russia understands difficult problems better than others. "We are sincerely interested in the settlement of these conflicts," Mr. Putin said. We want stability in our region, he added. "We are not ready and are not going to assume responsibility for the complete settlement of conflicts. We do not want any country to shift responsibility for crisis settlement to Russia. It should not seem to anyone that this or that decision was made under Russia's pressure," the President noted. Evidently, in this case, the side, which feels slighted, will charge Russia with responsibility, Vladimir Putin said. According to him, it is counter-productive to adapt laws to this or that situation. "If we allow to adapt laws to this or that situation, this or that political force, we shall see no stability on the post-Soviet space. On the contrary, this vast and important region will be destabilized," the Russian leader emphasized. "This is absolutely inadmissible and counter-productive. I do not want any division into the eastern and western parts as it was in Germany," Mr. Putin said commenting on the situation in Ukraine. However, Russia is ready to cooperate with the leader, who will be elected by Ukrainian people, the President continued. "We shall agree with the will of any nation on the post-Soviet space and shall work with any elected leader. Naturally, we are closely cooperating with the incumbent authorities and our conduct on the post-Soviet space is absolutely correct. We do nothing backstairs. Nothing destructive," Vladimir Putin stressed. Politicians should not claim that they want power at any rate, he noted. "It is inadmissible to threaten people and leave them no choice," he said. "This is not mere pressure. This is intimidation. Russia will not support such developments even if someone calls it democracy," the Russian President concluded
