Visiting U.S. Secretary of State Colin Powell and Russian Foreign Minister Igor Ivanov are meeting on Monday for the 35th time.
Visiting U.S. Secretary of State Colin Powell and Russian Foreign Minister Igor Ivanov are meeting on Monday for the 35th time. Powell has earlier arrived in Moscow from Tbilisi where he attended the inauguration of Georgia’s President Mikhail Saakashvili. He is expected to stay in Moscow until January 27. Russia and the USA have managed to draw closer their positions through joint efforts, the two men stated at their Moscow talks on Monday. The Russian foreign minister emphasized that at the summit talks in Moscow, the presidents of the two countries “outlined further steps of Russian-American cooperation”. Igor Ivanov offered his counterpart to discuss “directions of strategic cooperation for the strengthening of the world order”. The U.S. secretary of state, for his part, emphasized that the two countries are building their relations on a solid foundation. According to him, the summit meeting has brought Moscow and Washington closer, as the two presidents gave instructions to boost ties not only between the foreign ministries but also at other levels. According to Deputy Head of the Kremlin Administration Sergei Prikhodko, President Vladimir Putin is also planning to meet with the U.S. secretary of state. He said “Iraq, Iran, preparations for the G-8 summit, Middle East, and bilateral cooperation” are among the subjects they are expected to discuss. Powell’s visit to Moscow is “a good opportunity to discuss the entire agenda, including both international and bilateral issues,” an informed source from the Russian Foreign Ministry told Itar-Tass on Monday. Ivanov and Powell met for the first time in Cairo in February 2001, soon after George Bush was sworn into office as president of the United States. In the first weeks of the year, Ivanov has already conducted negotiations with his counterparts from China and France, the countries that are also permanent members of the U.N. Security Council.
