On Friday the Mariinsky Theater will perform "The Czar's Bride" in Groningen, the Netherlands
On Friday the Mariinsky (Kirov) Theater will perform Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov's "The Czar's Bride," in Groningen, the Netherlands. The theater's press service said the performance was a joint production between the theater and the Dyagilev Festival in Groningen. Yuri Alexandrov is the producer, Zinovy Margolin is the art director and Valery Gergiyev is the director and conductor. Olga Trifonova, Yulia Smorodina, Yevgeny Nikitin, Viktor Chernomortsev, Olga Savova and Nadezhda Serdyuk will play the lead roles. The exhibit, "Working with Dyagilev," also opens on Friday for the festival. The exhibit displays the works by Picasso, Matisse, Benua, Golovin, Serov, Vrubel, Goncharov and Larionov. In St. Petersburg, "The Czar's Bride" will be performed on December 29 and January 2. Mariinsky Theater soloists Anna Netrebko (Marfa) and Yevgeny Nikitin (Gryaznoi) will perform the leads in the opera. The opera was first performed at the private Mamontov Opera in Moscow in 1899. "This a legendary opera," the press service said. "It premiered October 30, 1901, and it was conducted by Eduard Napravnik. It was performed again in 1924 and 1966." The theater often performs operas by Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov. "The Tale of Czar Saltan" will open in March
