One police officer was killed and two others injured on Thursday
One police officer was killed and two others injured on Thursday during a clash with militants in Nazran, the largest city in Russia's North Caucasus republic of Ingushetia, a police spokesman said.

The incident occurred on Thursday morning after the police officers had surrounded the gunmen in a house in southwest Nazran.

"The shootout lasted for an hour and a half. Preliminary reports say that two officers were injured and one killed," the spokesman told RIA Novosti.

"The house was blown up. There are various reports indicating that the militants may have blown the house up from inside," he said.

The spokesman said it was not immediately reported if there were any casualties among the militants.

The Russia-based human rights group, the Moscow Helsinki Group, said in September that the republic was on the verge of civil war as fighting between militants and authorities intensified. It also accused federal authorities of torture and abductions.
