At least 11 people were killed and 22 injured early
At least 11 people were killed and 22 injured early on Tuesday after a passenger bus carrying pilgrims fell into a gorge in the south of India, the IANS news agency reported.

The bus, containing some 60 pilgrims, was en route from the state of Andhra Pradesh to the Hindu shrine of Sabarimala in the Pathanamthitta district of the southwestern state of Kerala, when the tragic accident occurred.

"The bus fell into a gorge nearly 50 feet [15 meters] deep...about 93 miles [150 km] from the state capital of Thiruvananthapuram," the agency said.

Hundreds of local residents rushed to the scene of the crash to help the victims, and took the injured and the dead, nine of who were women, in a truck to the nearest town.

"We have asked for a detailed inquiry into the incident," the agency quoted Kerala Transport Minister Mathew Thomas as saying.

Kerala authorities have announced compensation of 100,000 rupees (some $2,000) for the families of those killed in the crash.
