A Chevrolet Lanos hit several people at a pedestrian crossing and then ran into the bus stop before driving off, the source said. A number of other people received minor injuries.

"The majority of those injured are [nearby] Moscow State University students," the source said. "Five people were hospitalized, and others are receiving medical attention at the scene."

He said one of those hospitalized was a 56-year-old woman, a U.S. national.

The car was later found abandoned not far from the scene of the incident. A search for its owner, identified by the car's license plate number, is underway.
