Only one third of young Russians are actually interested in politics
MOSCOW, January 27. Only one third of young Russians are actually interested in politics. This was the result of a survey of 1500 people between the ages of 18 and 35 carried out by the Public Opinion foundation in January 2004. The survey revealed that two thirds (62%) of young Russians are not in the least interested in politics. Only 46% of respondents said they discuss political events with their friends and peers while 51% claimed they do not. The most apolitical age appears to be between 18 and 29. However, despite their lack of interest most respondents are certain that politics influences their lives: 51% claimed it has a strong influence whereas 23% said it has only a slight impact on their lives and just 15% believe that politics has no effect on their lives whatsoever. The overwhelming majority of respondents (81%) said there is no chance they could become an active supporter of a particular party and only 12% said they could. Never the less, 77% intend to take part in the upcoming presidential elections and just 14% said they would not.
