Two workers were killed and another one injured early on Thursday
Two workers were killed and another one injured early on Thursday after hydrogen sulfide leaked at an oil refinery in Russia's Urals region, a local police source said.

The leak occurred during a steam operation on a hydrotreater at a LUKoil refinery in the city of Perm.

"As a result, two hydrotreater operators died at the scene and another one was hospitalized," the source said, adding that there was no air pollution threat at the site.

An investigation into the accident has been launched.

Hydrogen sulfide is a highly toxic and flammable gas. Although very pungent at first, it quickly deadens the sense of smell, so potential victims may not be unaware of its presence until it is too late.

It can poison several different systems in the body, although the nervous system is most affected.
