About 2,500 people participated in the parade in downtown Moscow
About 2,500 people participated in the parade in downtown Moscow on Sunday to celebrate the Irish national holiday, St. Patrick's Day.

"The costume show gathered about 2,500 participants and almost six thousand viewers, with 2,000-strong police responsible for security measures during the event. No violations of public order were registered," a Moscow police spokesman said.

St. Patrick's Day is celebrated worldwide by Irish people. St. Patrick was a fifth-century Christian missionary to Ireland. Over time, he became the patron saint of Ireland. The Irish and their friends celebrate the holiday by wearing green or orange and eating Irish foods. They mark the holiday with music and dancing.

The parade in Moscow to mark St. Patrick's Day has been held since 1992.
