An Uzbek national was murdered on Friday afternoon in the western
An Uzbek national was murdered on Friday afternoon in the western Russian city of Kaliningrad, a spokeswoman for the local investigation department said.

"An unknown man stabbed an Uzbek national, who worked at a construction site, to death," Marianna Andryushina said. "He inflicted at least nine stab wounds to him."

A search for the suspect is ongoing. Police are not ruling out that the attack was a race-hate assault, but other motives are also being checked.

Attacks on foreigners and ethnic minorities are a regular occurrence in Moscow and St. Petersburg as well as other Russian cities.

Russia's Interior Ministry has warned that Russia could see a rise in crimes against foreigners and migrant workers amid the worsening economic situation in the country.

The Russian government decided to scrap quotas for foreigners working in retail outlets in 2009 in an effort to decrease the unemployment rate among Russians.
