The Bolshoi Theater opens new season on December 22
The Bolshoi Theater opens new season on December 22 with a Russian premiere of the production of Midsummer Night's Dream, staged by choreographer John Neumeier, Bolshoi general director Anatoly Iksanov told a news conference. "I am very glad that for the first time the Bolshoi will have working with it such a renowned ballet master as John Neumeier," Mr. Iksanov said. "And I am pleased that we are opening the ballet season precisely with this production." Mr. Neumeier was born in the US, and studied in London and Copenhagen. He began his career as a dancer. In 1969, heading The Frankfurt Ballet, Mr. Neumeier staged original ballets - The Nutcracker, Romeo and Juliet and Daphnis and Chloe - which caused a furor in ballet art. Mr. Neumeier's talent as a choreographer revealed itself in different productions he staged on Shakespeare's plays. But Midsummer Night's Dream takes pride of place in the work of the famous choreographer. The first time the ballet master staged it was in 1977 in Hamburg. Then it had a run in the Paris Opera and the Vienna Opera, and with the Danish Royal Ballet, and the Swedish Royal Ballet. It was also shown in Dresden. The Russian premiere is Mr. Neumeier's first production in the Bolshoi. "When I staged the Dream for my own company many years ago, I wanted to show a ballet group that can work as a fine theater company, like Moscow Art Academic Theater in its best days, for example," said Mr. Neumeier. "So that there would be a stunning ensemble, rather than a hierarchic pyramid of 19th century ballets." The choreographer said he was interested in trying to produce the Dream with Moscow company, "because it seems to me that the Bolshoi is very rich in acting and scenic characters." The production of Midsummer Night's Dream features Bolshoi stars, including Svetlana Zakharova, Svetlana Lunkina, Anna Antonicheva, and also Nikolai Tsiskaridze, Dmitry Belogolovtsev, and Yuri Klevtsov.
