Russia should be more active in developing relations with Ukraine
Russia should be more active in developing relations with Ukraine. This was the view expressed on Wednesday by Sergei Markov, director of the Institute of Political Research, commenting on the results of the election in Ukraine. He said Russia "did little and was not active in Ukraine, and should derive lessons for itself". "What is happening in that country cannot be indifferent to us," Markov said. He said it is impossible not to see that some members of the Yushchenko team "pose a threat to Russian-Ukrainian relations". "From private conversations with the Ukrainian elite we should go over to large-scale joint efforts and establishment of a dialogue between the Russian and Ukrainian communities," the political expert believes. In his view, there are three categories of population who voted for Yushchenko and whom "Russia missed" - it is the class of intellectuals, youths and journalists. "It is not that the West bribed them, it [the West] merely financed youth and teaching programs in Ukraine, something which Russia did not do," Markov said. "We need not hide. Russia is still popular in Ukraine, we share a thousand-year-long history, a common culture, and a close mentality. But the main thing is that the Ukrainians themselves do not want us to leave Ukraine," Markov concluded. Stanislav Belkovsky, president of the Institute of National Strategy, in his turn expressed the view that "Ukraine's movement towards NATO is inevitable". He said Russia still has only five to seven years left, which will determine Russian-Ukrainian relations. "If we miss the moment, Ukraine's movement away from Russia will continue and become irreversible," Belkovsky emphasized.
