Dynamo Kiev and Shakhtar Donetsk face off in what promises
Dynamo Kiev and Shakhtar Donetsk face off in what promises to be a captivating UEFA Cup first leg, semifinal encounter in the Ukrainian capital on Thursday evening.

Dynamo, 12 points ahead of second placed Shakhtar in the domestic league, go into the tie as favorites. Tickets for the match sold out within a couple of hours of going on sale.

"There is huge expectation around the country," Dynamo Kiev's Russian coach Yury Syomin told UEFA. "It's creating a big clamour. We're at a serious level now."

"The match will be extraordinary for Ukraine, and the whole of Europe will be watching so it's vital for both clubs. We will try to demonstrate the kind of football the UEFA Cup semifinals deserve," Shakhtar's Romanian coach Mircea Lucescu said.

The game kicks off at 7:30 p.m. [17:30 GMT]. The second leg takes place in Donetsk in a week's time.

The 2008/09 European season has been the most successful for Ukrainian clubs since 1999, when Valery Lobanovskiy's Dynamo Kiev reached the semifinals of the Champions League.

With the other semifinal between Werder Bremen and Hamburg SV, a German-Ukrainian final is guaranteed. This season will be the third time in the last five years that a club from a former Soviet republic has reached the final, with CSKA Moscow victorious in 2005 and an Andrei Arshavin-inspired Zenit St. Petersburg lifting the trophy last year.
