President Leonid Kuchma of Ukraine has accepted the resignation of Prime Minister Viktor Yanukovich, reports the presidential press service. First deputy Prime Minister Nikolai Azarov was appointed acting prime minister. Azarov had served as director of the State Tax Administration since October 1996, before being appointed first deputy prime minister and minister of finance. Yanukovich used to head the Ukrainian government since November 21, 2002. He had served as chairman of the Donetsk regional administration since May 1997, also heading the regional council in May 1999-May 2001. Yanukovich ran for president in 2004. According to the Central Election Commission, he lost the second round to his opponent Viktor Yushchenko once again December 26, collecting eight percent less votes. Yanukovich resigned December 31, 2004, explaining his decision by the fact that he could not remain in power during the current political situation. At the same time, he noted that he intended to remain in politics. I will take an active part in political processes and in the country's political life, he said
