Russo-Japanese peace treaty will be discussed during the visit of Japanese Foreign Minister
Issues relating to the Russo-Japanese peace treaty will be discussed during the visit of Japanese Foreign Minister Nobutaka Machimura slated for January 13-15, according to Foreign Ministry spokesman Alexander Yakovenko. "The Russian stance on the matter was clearly voiced by the Russian president at the December 23 news conference. According to the president, we are very afflicted with the fact that the issue of the peace treaty has not been settled yet. Both Russia and Japan are interested in removing all stumbling blocks hampering the promotion of the [bilateral] relations," Yakovenko said. According to the diplomat, Russia is not intent on "dodging the discussion of the peace treaty no matter how complicated the issue is." "We are convinced that the potential of a possible mutually acceptable solution may be achieved via gradual development of the links between the two countries in all fields and comprehensive build-up of trust and mutual understanding between the Russians and the Japanese," the Russian Foreign Ministry spokesman stressed. In addition, the head of the Japanese Foreign Ministry is going to discuss with his Russian counterpart, Sergei Lavrov, a whole range of matters of both global and regional importance. "Among them are the further bolstering of the Russo-Japanese cooperation in the fight against international terrorism, joint pursuit of responses to other global challenges, a UN reform, the problem of Iraq, the general situation in the Asia-Pacific region and prospects for the settlement on the Korean Peninsula," Yakovenko said. The diplomat added that Japan's support for Russia's accession to the World Trade Organization (WTO) is going to be on the agenda as well. During his visit to Moscow, Mr. Machimura is also supposed to meet Viktor Khristenko, Russian minister of industry and energy. Speaking of the date of the Russian president's visit to Japan. Mr. Yakovenko said in particular: "Now, the parties are working to come to an agreement on documents to be signed during the summit meeting. The documents cover the political dialogue, economic cooperation, particularly that in power engineering, and interaction in the international arena. The date of the [Russian president's] visit hinges on the date the above documents are ready on." "The two sides are united in striving to fill the upcoming Russian-Japanese summit meeting with specific content for the meeting to give new impetus to developing the bilateral relations in all spheres and to become a hallmark event for Russia and Japan on the way to real partnership," Yakovenko concluded.
