Upcoming visit of Japanese Foreign Minister Nobutaka Machimura to Russia
Moscow hopes that the meetings during the upcoming visit of Japanese Foreign Minister Nobutaka Machimura to Russia and the January 13-15 talks will continue the mutual course on strengthening cooperation between the two countries, stated Russian foreign ministry spokesman Alexander Yakovenko in an interview with RIA Novosti on Tuesday. "We proceed from the assumption that the upcoming visit of the Japanese foreign minister and the January 13-15 talks will continue the course on expanding the cooperation between Russia and Japan on a wide range of issues and will promote the strengthening of mutual understanding and trust between the two countries," the diplomat said. According to Mr. Yakovenko, "we consider relations with Japan, our neighbor in the Far East, member of G8, and one of the largest economies in the world, one of the key priorities in our foreign policy." He noted that Russian President Vladimir Putin stated during a recent press conference that relations between Russia and Japan were developing rather intensively. The sides maintain regular contacts on the political level. In addition, bilateral trade turnover has been growing with an increasing speed. Both Moscow and Tokyo regard the development and the strengthening of cooperation on the global arena as an important factor of the improvement of bilateral ties and strengthening of stability and security in the Asian Pacific region and the world, in general. "We assume that Japan is interested in further development of bilateral political and economic ties as much as Russia is," Mr. Yakovenko emphasized. He said that the talks between foreign ministers start the anniversary year for Russian-Japanese relations. February 7, 2005 marks the 150th anniversary of the establishment of official relations between Russia and Japan as a result of the signing of the Shimoda Treaty, the first Russian-Japanese treaty that proclaimed "permanent peace and sincere friendship between Russia and Japan." The upcoming anniversary is a memorable date in the history of relations between the two countries and an important point for the assessment of the current state of bilateral relations and determination of future perspectives of their development.
