All political forces of Iraqi society including the opposition must participate
"Our fundamental position on the situation around Iraq remained unchanged. We believe that national accord and reconciliation is the main condition for stabilization of the situation in that country," stated Russian Defense Minister Sergei Ivanov speaking at the Council on foreign relations in New York. He pointed out that all political forces of Iraqi society including the opposition must participate in the process. "Certainly, we are not talking about organizations that prepare and commit terrorist acts," the Russian minister underlined. He also stressed that the elections to the interim national assembly scheduled for January 30 must become a necessary step toward the creation of a democratic state in Iraq. At the same time, Mr. Ivanov reminded that during the meeting with prime minister of Iraqi interim government Ayad Allawi on December 7 last year in Moscow, Russian president Vladimir Putin emphasized that it would be difficult to hold elections in Iraq while the country was practically occupied by coalition forces and called for the search of acceptable political solutions of the current situation. "We know that various political parties, ethnic and religious groups have different attitudes toward the elections. There were statements about boycotting the voting. There are attempts to form competing lists of candidates to deputies of the future parliament. I am not even speaking about constant terrorist acts in Iraq. In my opinion their number will significantly increase closer to the election day," the Russian minister said.
