More than 2,893,000 crimes were registered in Russia last year, says the report posted by the Russian Interior Ministry's press service on its official web site on Tuesday. "In January-December, 2004, 2,893,800 crimes were registered in Russia. It is 5% more than during the same period of 2003," the press release says. The increase of criminal activity has been registered in 57 (out of 89) subjects of the Russian Federation, and the decrease - in 32 subjects. According to interior ministry records, an average share of grave and particularly grave crimes decreased from 39.2% to 32.4% compared with the same period of 2003. The document points out that almost a half of the registered crimes (54.7%) were thefts of personal property in the form of larceny, burglary and robbery. The amount of registered crimes involving illegal arms sales decreased almost by half. "This number decreased by 47.5% compared with last year and constituted 28,400," the press release reports. The number of registered crimes involving theft and extortion of weapons, ammunition, explosives and explosive devices decreased by 16.2%. Last year, 22,700 crimes were committed with the use of weapons. The largest number of such crimes was registered in the Sverdlovsk region (the Urals), the Irkutsk region (Siberia), and in St. Petersburg. The Interior Ministry conceded that the number of unsolved crimes went up by 9.2% and constituted 1,265,000. "5,600 murders and murder attempts, 13,700 premeditated attempts to cause serious harm to health, 790,000 thefts, 153,300 robberies and 25,700 assaults remained unsolved," the document states. At the same time, the number of solved cases went up by 3.3%. "In 2004, 1,569,300 crimes were solved," the press release reports.
