The first coordination meeting of a special group of the Pact of Paris on Tajikistan will be held on January 19 in Dushanbe
The first coordination meeting of a special group of the Pact of Paris on Tajikistan will be held on January 19 in Dushanbe, announced press secretary of the Tajik anti-drug agency, Major Avaz Yuldashev. He said that the participants in the meeting would discuss issues of the fight against drug-trafficking on the border between Tajikistan and Afghanistan and assistance to Tajik special services after the withdrawal of Russian frontier guards from the Tajik-Afghani border (according to Russian-Tajik intergovernmental agreement, by the beginning of 2006, the committee on protection of the state border under the Tajik government will take control over the entire length of the Tajik-Afghani border). The Pact of Paris was founded in 2004 during a G8 meeting in Paris. At present, 55 countries have joined the Pact, including countries that are known as major markets and conduits for drugs produced in Afghanistan, and also various international financial institutions. According to Mr. Yuldashev, Tajik law enforcement agencies, together with Russian frontier guards, seized more than 8 tons of drugs in 2004. Heroin constituted more than a half of the seized amount.
