Vladimir Putin and George Bush would discuss how the world could respond more effectively to such disasters as the tidal wave that hit Southeast Asia
Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov has announced that the Russian and U.S. presidents will discuss measures to increase the international community's ability to respond to natural disasters at their summit in Bratislava. At a Moscow press conference the minister said that Vladimir Putin and George Bush would discuss how the world could respond more effectively to such disasters as the tidal wave that hit Southeast Asia. Mr. Lavrov also said that the two presidents would focus on a number of international problems. Russia and the U.S., the Russian minister said, must play leading roles in the fight against international terrorism, the non-proliferation of weapons of mass destruction and efforts against drug trafficking and organized crime. The two presidents will also discuss how agreements reached at previous meetings are being implemented. "Vladimir Putin and George Bush exchange opinions and assessments about how agreements reached at previous meetings are being implemented," the minister said. "There are specific action plans and timetables, and the presidents will discuss their implementation." Mr. Lavrov also said that the heads of state would discuss bilateral relations. The minister pointed out that progress had been made in trade and economic, as well as investments cooperation. "American companies are boosting their presence on the Russian market," he said, "while Russian companies are making ground on the American market."
