"In 2004, 14,356 people received Russian citizenship, almost 10,000 more than in 2003," Aleksei Mikulenko, the head of the Moscow interior department's passport and visa department told journalists Wednesday. He added that 7,228 people received residence permits. "Also in 2004 908,506 foreign citizens were registered at their places of residence. In 2003 658,576 people were registered," Mr. Mikulenko said. According to Mr. Mikulenko, in 2004 work permits were granted to 96,671 foreigners, 30,000 more than in 2003. In addition, 2,611 permits were issued to employers to hire foreigners. In Moscow last year, 388,463 passports were granted, an increase of 15,696 over 2003, Mr. Mikulenko added.
