On Sunday, a giant iceberg blocked the path of a convoy of ships, lead by the Russian icebreaker Krasin, which headed toward the American McMurdo Antarctic station. The convoy also includes the U.S. Natanell Palmer hydrographic scientific research icebreaker and the U.S. Paul Buck tanker with 19,000 tons of diesel fuel for American polar explorers. Referring to information received from the Krasin's captain Viktor Kovalchyuk, sources in the administration of the Far Eastern Shipping Line announced that the total area of the iceberg exceeds 3,600 square kilometers and its height is about 8 meters. The iceberg is firmly embedded in low waters. If the convoy fails to circumvent the iceberg and approach the berth at McMurdo Station, which desperately needs fuel, it will be necessary to evacuate more than a thousand American polar explorers by air.
