Viktor Yushchenko pledged to justify voters' confidence and bring the country to the European level
"We will change the life of our people and my victory is the victory of the Ukrainian people. This victory will open the way to the future for our country," said Mr. Yushchenko addressing people who gathered at the Independence Square in Kiev. He assured that Ukraine would always respect the freedom of speech and free press and recognize the supremacy of law. "Today's Ukraine is an independent and free state. Nobody will ever be able to order Ukraine around. We will decide for ourselves what to do and how to live," the head of the Ukrainian state announced. Mr. Yushchenko reminded that two months ago, millions of people took upon the streets and squares to defend democracy, and "the Independence Square became the heart of democracy." "It is here that we realized that we are Ukrainian citizens. Our people have won a great victory - we managed to conduct fair elections and to choose freely the future path. We have chosen prosperity, justice, freedom and independence. Our victory proves that Ukraine is a truly sovereign and independent state. Our victory is a celebration of statehood," the president emphasized.
