Gennady Zyuganov claims for his party the role of organizer of protest actions against the replacement of benefits with cash payments
Gennady Zyuganov, leader of the Communist Party of the Russian Federation (KPRF), claims for his party the role of organizer of protest actions against the replacement of benefits with cash payments. Thus, he refutes many experts' opinion that pensioners took to the streets spontaneously, to protest against the abolition of benefits. "We are the organizers of these actions. We have not concealed this and we won't do so," Zyuganov said at a RIA Novosti's press conference. Street protest marches and rallies are organized by various public organisations and by the Yabloko and Rodina (Fatherland) parties. According to Zyuganov's data, nearly 300,000 people took part in protest actions against the unpopular law held in different regions. The KPRF leader said that on February 12 a nationwide protest action against the government's social policy would be held on the left opposition's initiative. In his words, the KPRF puts forward the following demands: the government's resignation, a free choice of either benefits or a compensation for them, and an increase of the minimum pay to the real subsistence level. Since Friday, the KPRF faction in the State Duma (the parliament's lower chamber) has not received a single signature in support of the government's resignation. Ivan Melnikov, first deputy chairman of the KPRF Central Committee, said before to RIA Novosti that "the signatures were collected during one day; 77 signatures were obtained at the Friday Duma session." Gennady Zyuganov cited the same figure at the press conference on Wednesday. However, he expressed certainty that "within the next one or two days the 90 necessary deputies' signatures will be collected and the parliamentary procedure of preparation for voting on the government's resignation will be launched." "We shall submit the signature list the day after tomorrow," Zyuganov said. In his words, some 15-18 independent deputies and nearly the entire Rodina faction will join communists. The initiators of the non-confidence vote also rely on some members of the pro-government United Russia faction which has the majority in the State Duma. Zyuganov asked Dmitry Rogozin, leader of the Rodina party and its faction in the Duma, to stop the hunger strike and join street protests. For six days in a row, Rogozin and activists of the Rodina faction have been on a hunger strike at the parliament demanding to freeze the benefits law. In Zyuganov's words, he looks with understanding at the form of protest chosen by Rogozin, but he is not going to follow suit. "One must be healthy and fit for active protest," Zyuganov said and added, in passing, that he had no need to lose flesh.
