The cult rock band R.E.M. will give its first and sole concert in St. Petersburg's Ice Palace
The cult rock band R.E.M. famous for its music and tough anti-Bush position has never performed in Russia. It will give its first and sole concert in St. Petersburg's Ice Palace, the Novyie Izvestia newspaper writes. This is a jubilee tour. R.E.M. (Rapid Eye Movement, an active phase of sleep when your eyes move back and forth under closed eyelids) gave its first concert in the church of a small American town of Athens 25 years ago. This performance gave a start to the jangle pop music style. The song Losing My Religion was a hit of the 1990s. The current tour is organized to support the 14th album of the group, Around the Sun. R.E.M. is known both for its music and political actions. R.E.M. leader Michael Stipe calls his band "angriest pacifists". Being an American group, the rock stars hold the most radical position against George Bush's policy. At the recent elections they supported his rival Jim Kerry and organized a two-week anti-Bush tour across the United States. During the current European tour R.E.M. apologizes for the U.S. foreign policy at every concert. After the concert in St. Petersburg the musicians will go to Finland
