Russia and China will hold joint anti-terror exercises, Community-2005, in August-September 2005
Russia and China will hold joint anti-terror exercises, Community-2005, in August-September 2005, Russian First Deputy Defense Minister Alexander Belousov reported. "It will be the first time we hold exercises in cooperation with China, particularly on the parity basis. Planning will be carried out on Russian territory, whereas the practical part will be conducted in China," Belousov said. According to the official, the command post exercises will involve various kinds of forces, including strategic aviation. International terrorism will be a conditional enemy. One of these days an expert group of the Russian Ministry of Defense will set off for China to discuss and think the upcoming exercises through. "We have determined only forces and means. Several hundred servicemen will take part in the exercises on the Russian part," Belousov said. As a rule, such exercises train joint planning, he added. Belousov remarked that holding the practical part of the exercises on Chinese territory was Beijing's move. Asked why emphasis is laid on the Far Eastern region, Belousov answered, "China is our most serious neighbor both in terms of the extent of its border and its population." Belousov stressed the necessity of using simulators for training. "It is very expensive to hold exercises," he said. "Tomorrow pilots will present two new air combat simulators in the Moscow region's town of Zhukovsky. These simulators can be programmed to reproduce any operation area," Belousov noted. This year Russia will host large-scale exercises, such as Vostok-2005, involving the Pacific Fleet, Air Forces and Army Forces, Rubezh-2005, which will be held by the Collective Security Treaty Organization member states (Russia, Belarus, Armenia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan), and the CIS air defense forces' exercises, the First Deputy of the Russian Minister of Defense was quoted as saying
