The traditional exhibition entitled "Christmas Gifts. China Academy" opened in the State Hermitage
The traditional exhibition entitled "Christmas Gifts. China Academy" opened in the State Hermitage, Nezavisimaya Gazeta reports. This is a joint project of the Hermitage and Lomonosov china factory. Over 50 modern artists were involved in this artistic action in June-October 2004. Most of them got a unique possibility to work at the factory for the first time. This action was already held at the factory in the 20th century and yielded remarkable results - pieces of china painted by Malevich, Kandinsky and Petrov-Vodkin. Famous Moscow artists (Safronov, Tsereteli, Shemyakin, etc.) and St. Petersburg's Mitki (a group of artists combining features of conceptualism and social arts) participated in the action. Artist Mikhail Shemyakin presented two china series: children's set "Little Rats" and stylish sculptures of the musical series "Characters of the Nutcracker ballet." Sculptor Zurab Tsereteli presented two musical compositions "A Violin" and "A Harp and a Violin." Unlike the artist's traditional works, they are tender and quivering. According to Hermitage director Mikhail Piotrovsky, "modern art is developing due to traditions even if it denies them. Divine material china demands total commitment, high level of technical skills and subtle taste. We are happy that many artists possess this gift."
