Alu Alkhanov believes that Aslan Maskhadov will not give up Shamil Basayev to federal authorities
Chechen President Alu Alkhanov believes that Aslan Maskhadov will not give up Shamil Basayev to federal authorities. "Maskhadov does not intend to give up Basayev either alive or dead," Mr. Alkhanov told reporters in Moscow, commenting on Mr. Maskhadov's interview, published in the Russian press. In the interview, Mr. Maskhadov said that Basayev would be brought to trial "after the end of the war." "I have already expressed my point of view with regard to peace initiatives," Mr. Alkhanov said, answering RIA Novosti's question on Maskhadov's peace initiatives. Earlier, Mr. Alkhanov stated that Maskhadov and Basayev have only one chance and that is to surrender to the federal authorities. In regard to Mr. Basayev's fate, Mr. Alkhanov said: "I do not have any proof of his death (some media reported it last week). Therefore, I can neither assert nor deny this fact."
