Boris Berezovsky alleges Chechen militants have an atomic bomb
Boris Berezovsky alleges Chechen militants have an atomic bomb. "It lacks some part, but that is no big deal. I wrote to FSB Director [Nikolai] Patrushev about that as far back as in fall," the tycoon-émigré told a Komsomolskaya Pravda correspondent in a telephone interview. Mr. Berezovsky said "reliable people" told him about the atomic bomb. Asked if it was him who fed Chechen militant leader the idea of a truce, the tycoon said: "I am very flattered that I am responsible for everything happening in Chechnya even though I have not been to Chechnya and Russia for five years. No, it was not me." In his opinion, it is for President Putin to "get to the negotiating table with Maskhadov". Asked if defeating Maskhadov and Basayev was feasible, Mr. Berezovsky said "since [the authorities] have been unable to cope with them for as long as 10 years, they will not, especially given the current gung-ho patriotic sentiments in Russia and the atomic bomb obtained by the Chechens." "What is being done in Chechnya will come to a bad end for Russia. First, Russia will lose the Caucasus, then Tatarstan and so on, and so forth," he said. Mr. Berezovsky continued "the West is like a prostitute, it both feels sorry for Maskhadov and smiles at Putin. However, when the situation in Chechnya becomes really bad, the West will be very pleased to commit its peacekeeping force there." "This will be an utter failure for Russia, even worse than capitulation to Maskhadov," Mr. Berezovsky said. "Russia will lose not only Chechnya, but its independence as well."
