Russian military transport aircraft delivered more than 380 tons of humanitarian aid to Southeast Asian regions affected by tsunami
Russian military transport aircraft delivered more than 380 tons of humanitarian aid to Southeast Asian regions affected by tsunami, announced Russian Defense Minister Sergei Ivanov at the welcome ceremony for the returning group of military doctors of the 183rd special medical detachment sent to Indonesian province of Banda-Aceh in the north of Sumatra to provide medical assistance to the tsunami victims. "The military transport aircraft executed a speedy delivery of more than 380 tons to the disaster area. Russia was among the first to provide concrete assistance," he underlined. "For more than a month, a mobile field hospital set up on the basis of the 183rd special medical unit helped Indonesian people to fight the impending epidemics threat. Russian medical personnel not only provided epidemiological assistance to the victims, but also rendered qualified surgical aid," the Russian minister stressed. He said that the specialists from the Russian medical detachment examined about 5,000 people, conducted vaccination of more than 2,000 children, provided ambulatory assistance to about 2,000 victims and performed 212 surgeries. "Overall, 90 local residents were hospitalized, 17 of those had infections," the minister reported. "These numbers show a high degree of selflessness and professionalism on your part, which allowed to preserve the life and health of many people and stopped the spread of epidemic catastrophe," Sergei Ivanov stated addressing the returning doctors.
