new Georgian ambassador to Russia is being appointed for political reasons
A new Georgian ambassador to Russia is being appointed for political reasons, to try to restore bilateral relations with the Russian Federation. This statement was made yesterday by Georgian President Mikhail Saakashvili. Yesterday morning it was announced that Mr Saakashvili's political advisor Kote Kemularia will be appointed the new Georgian Ambassador to Russia. Parliament is expected to confirm this appointment before the Georgian leader's first official visit to Moscow, which is expected to take place on February 11 at the invitation of Russian President Vladimir Putin. Mr Saakashvili said the current ambassador Zurab Abashidze, at the request of former Georgian president Eduard Shevardnadze, helped to falsify the results of the Georgian parliamentary elections in Moscow in November 2003. 'It is a criminal case. Such people should not be allowed to work in diplomacy,' he said.
